What Causes Diabetes?

What causes type 1 diabetes
What causes diabetes of type 1? It’s an autoimmune disease. It’s caused by lack of insulin. This is as a result of the destruction of insulin. Beta cells are produced in the pancreas. They are attacked and destroyed by the body’s immune system. Actually, the function of the immune system is to protect the body from any infection. This is achieved by identifying and destroying viruses, bacteria, and any other potentially harmful substances that may cause infections. For an autoimmune disease, this system attacks its own body cells. The destruction of beta cells may take several years in type 1 diabetes but at a short period, symptom develops. Normally, it occurs in young adults and children but it can appear at any age. In adults, latent autoimmune is a slow development of type 1 diabetes. It’s normally called latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) caused by the destruction of beta cells by the immune system.
Genetic susceptibility also plays a major role in determining who is more likely to develop this type of diabetes. This is all about heredity. Genes are passed down from parent to children. The instructions carried by genes for proteins making are needed for normal functioning of the body. A certain gene called human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) found on white blood cells are associated with the development of type 1 diabetes. The protein produced by this gene helps in determining whether the immune system recognizes a cell as a foreign material or as part of the body. Some combinations of HLA are protective whereas some predicts that the person is in danger of developing diabetes.

What causes type 2 diabetes
It’s the most common form of diabetes and develops as a result of various combinations of factors. Gene inheritance plays a major role in susceptibility to type 2 diabetes. A certain combination of genes is responsible for the development of diabetes but can decrease the risks for developing the same. According to health experts, the variant of TCF7L2 gene is prone to increase the susceptibility of this disease. Genes usually affect the production of insulin rather than resistance. The tendency of becoming obese or overweight caused by the genes increases the risks of diabetes.
Production of excess glucose by the liver can also lead to diabetes. It causes an increase in levels of glucose in the blood. When the levels of glucose in the blood are high, glucagon levels drops. This results in excess storage of glucose in the liver to be used later. On the other hand, high level of glucagon makes the liver produce extra unneeded glucose. This causes type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is also strongly associated with the physical activities and obesity, especially to those people who are genetically susceptible. Obesity is caused by an imbalance between the physical activities and the level of calorie intake. This causes insulin resistance and more common to overweight and obese people. This is due to excess abdominal fat which is not physically active in the body. Therefore, Liver cells, muscles, and fat don’t respond properly to insulin. Pancreas is forced to produce extra insulin. This leads to increase in body’s glucose level which causes diabetes. In fact, belly fat produces hormones which are responsible for harmful and chronic effects in your body. Central obesity also causes heart and blood vessels diseases, usually called cardiovascular diseases. Actually, an attempt to lose weight can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This is achieved through reduction of abdominal fat.
